VILLEROI François de Neufville, duke of [Lyon,... - Lot 201 - Varenne Enchères
VILLEROI François de Neufville, duke of [Lyon, 1644 - Paris, 1730], marshal of France. Autograph letter signed "de Neufville" addressed to the duke of Epernon, peer and colonel general of the French Infantry. Fontainebleau, October 22, 1611; 2 pages in-folio, address with small wax seal on back. (small holes by openings of the letter, does not disturb the text). Interesting letter on the return to France of Henri II de Bourbon, prince of Condé, his interview with Marie de Medicis, and on the assemblies of Protestants. Villeroy was present at the interview of the prince and the Queen, and reports the "declarations & new protestations which luy made of his inviolable affection to serve the king [...] His mate has remained quite constant. [...] the prince went to St Jehan dangely where he saw Mrs. de Rohan & Soubise but Mr. de Sully was not there : he has a bad opinion of these particular assamblees of those of the religion pretended to be reformed that one makes by the provinces of France that they prevent the offices that we hope our commissioners who are sent there at the moment will do to take care of the complaints of the ones and the others ". Villeroy hopes that "the scrambles will not have the power to move the general, whom we know to desire peace more than war. He gives finally news of Madame de Lorraine, of the stay in Fontainebleau of the King and the Queen, of their future return to Paris, of the arrival of the cardinal of Gonzague, of the death of the Queen of Spain (Marguerite of Austria) who "was a very good and virtuous princess who loved our mistress".
