RACINE Louis [Paris, 1692 - id., 1763], French... - Lot 179 - Varenne Enchères
RACINE Louis [Paris, 1692 - id., 1763], French writer. Autograph letter signed addressed to Dr. Heerckens. March 29, 1757, 3 pages in-4°. "I see, sir, by the letter that you received from Amsterdam, and of which you sent me a copy, that you have run away from a violent enemy; for the love of Rousseau. I do not advise you to take his side so warmly; you must avoid literary quarrels. Let them think of him in Amsterdam as they wish, and let them condemn me for having defended him, which I am very indifferent to. I owe to memory and to truth the letter which I find in the journals of Trevoux, one will think of it as one pleases, but everything is true. [...] If you have read the new edition of Voltaire's Universal History, you will have been indignant at the way he speaks of those who write Latin verses, and who are not poets, but in a dead language.
