PAOLI Pasquale [Morosaglia, 1725 - London,... - Lot 169 - Varenne Enchères
PAOLI Pasquale [Morosaglia, 1725 - London, 1807], Corsican patriot. Signed letter. Corte, July 23, 1767; 5 1/2 pages in-8°, in Italian. Very long and interesting relation of the Corsican insurrection against the Genoese; real historical document. Paoli deplores the delay put by the count of Gontaut to embark and which had as a consequence the entry in the gulf of Calvi of two Genoese galleys and four feluccas ("due galere genovesi, e quattro feluche"); he relates an incident between Corsicans and French soldiers, the seizure of certain weapons. "You who know our nation, I thus let you imagine if this disarmament in similar circumstances would have been possible if those of Calvi had not been invited to obey blindly any order of the French... ". If the weapons are not restored to the Corsican people "it is just as if he [the Count of Gontaut] gave it like so many sheep to the rapacious gênois wolves [...]. We will always have the right to appeal to the Court of God and the hope that the political system can change and arrange some event in our favor...".
