NELSON Horatio [Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk,... - Lot 167 - Varenne Enchères
NELSON Horatio [Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, England, 1758 - Trafalgar, 1805], English admiral, victor of Aboukir and Trafalgar. Autograph letter, signed "Horatio Nelson" [in his first handwriting], addressed to Francis Drake, English minister in Genoa. Vado Bay, August 13, 1795; 2 pages in-4°, in English, folds tired (holes in folds). The principal armies engaged against the French Republic were those of Austria which, on the coast of Genoa, were commanded by general de Vins. Nelson with his squadron had to support the operations and he was impatient to see the Austrians set out for Provence. "I shall always be proud to have your approval [...] I am in every way ready to receive them [the French] and they would be more than fortunate if they ever managed to escape me. I hope that Admiral [Hotham] will arrive. I think the General would like to see him and Frederick is there waiting with dispatches he brought from England [...] General de Vins has plans in mind which he will certainly carry out during the month. If the Admiral did not arrive, I would give the General all the help I could and he would like to advance more towards the West"... He sends Francis Drake important statements and papers "to be able to refute the lies of the Genoese"...
