MILLER Henry [New York, 1891 - Pacific Palisades,... - Lot 157 - Varenne Enchères
MILLER Henry [New York, 1891 - Pacific Palisades, 1980], American novelist. Beautiful autograph letter signed, addressed to Conrad Moricand [1887-1954]. New York, March 1, 1941; 4 pages in-4° on Eola Hotel stationery in Natchez. "My dear Moricand. Your two letters with the article on the Iris cult have arrived. I found them here in New York where I was recalled from Natchez, Mississippi because of my father's death. Tomorrow I will be on my way again to Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, etc. The last few days I have been making inquiries as to how to help you - with money. It seems that there is no way at this time to send you any money of any kind or figure. Since the invasion of the Germans Anais and I have both tried to do this, knowing very well your situation. Even letters are forbidden. Twice we gave verbal messages for you to the French travelling to Vichy and Paris from here - but without result. Once we said that there was no longer a Mr. Moricand in your hotel! Can you imagine our emotion? The idea that you might be dead never occurred to us - but we assumed that you had escaped to Switzerland perhaps. And now your letter - two letters - one from July! And this one - when will the day be that it will be in your hands? But you are alive [...]. That's something, despite all the horrors. You may know that our Mr. Hoover has been trying to start a relief program for the victims of the war - but the British have blocked it. The nation is ready to give aid of any kind to all of Europe, but it is impossible - at this moment. I believe that we will speak differently when we hear the inevitable revolution that will follow because of this impossible situation. It is not Germans who prevent us from helping you. We pretend to distrust the Germans, and maybe we are right, I don't know - or more! But if you know of any tricks, please let me know. I'm always ready to help you. It was a cruel irony that when all communication was cut off, I could have helped you like never before. If it will not be embarrassing to receive letters I will write you from time to time. I must be informed. I answer now in the way described. I dare not say too much. Any indication signals a prolonged war. The other night, at an occult session, we were given the astrological prognostications from India. End of the war 1947. American crisis (as in 1776 and 1861 - Uranus cycles) - for 1944. [...] But it has been pointed out that it is a mistake to see this war as being like the previous ones. It is the end of something. I believe that it is the beginning of a new order in the economic and political sphere. The Soviets will have the last word. The vision of others (ours too, of course) is not broad and realistic enough. It is the people of the world who will take care of business when the warriors are exhausted. There will come a real "Fueher" before the war is over. He will not be a patriot, nor an avenger or butcher! When the suffering reaches its limits, someone will come forward in the name of all mankind. And he will be heard. The Gods let us do what we want - but when all seems lost they send us an intermediary. I believe that in the near future the Chinese, the Hindus, the Russians will have more to do in the world than the European people. The part of the USA is obscure. I see big troubles - enough to make us take care of ourselves. Because we, like the Europeans, are anchored in the past. As for me in the last few months - I have already traveled a third of this continent. I bought an old car and I drive myself. When I get back to Mississippi in two weeks I will cross the big river and head west - Texas, New Mexico, Old Mexico to Mexico City, Arizona, Nevada, California, et cetera. It's a great tour and the scenery is beautiful. As for life, it's different. American life leaves me completely cold. I am bored in the cities among the people. [...] I visited the Cherokees in North Carolina. [...] The most interesting state for me was Louisiana. I spent a few weeks there just recently. In New Orleans I did some research for Anaïs and found out all about her ancestors. [...] I spent a week with the Acadians in central Louisiana. André Maurois was there at the same time - giving speeches at a thousand dollars a session, I was told Jules Romains is there too, doing coneeries. A note from Conrad Moricand tells how he received this letter, 5
