METTERNICH Clemens, Prince of [Coblenz, 1773 - Vienna, 1859], the great Austrian diplomat and statesman. Autograph letter signed, addressed to Baron de Binder in Brussels. Aachen November 23, 1818; 2 1/2 pages in-4, in French. Very important letter sent during the congress of Aix-la-Chapelle. It is known that this congress consecrated the end of the occupation of France and the entry of the government of Louis XVIII in the system of the Holy Alliance. "You will have by me the whole knowledge of the acts passed to the Meeting [...]. I have every reason to believe that you will share my satisfaction with the work we have completed. The only question that remains - and it is the one that keeps us here - is that of the American colonies. I doubt very much whether it can be brought to a conciliation between the cabinets themselves. [...] Spain has lost all the time left to her to preserve some chance of success with her former subjects"...
