JOURDAN Jean-Baptiste, count [Limoges, 1762... - Lot 112 - Varenne Enchères
JOURDAN Jean-Baptiste, count [Limoges, 1762 - Paris, 1833], marshal of France. Autograph letter signed. Paris, "12 brumaire an 7 republique" [November 2, 1798]; 3 pages in-4°. "Your wife, whom I had the pleasure of seeing yesterday evening, told me, my good friend, that you were surprised not to receive news from me more often. I think I told you in one of my previous letters that I had good reasons for rarely writing to my friends, and especially for not talking to them about political affairs; and these reasons still remain. [...] A few days ago I sent you a precise copy of the operations of the Danube army which I published; I think you received it, and I beg you to tell me what you think of it. This work has caused a great sensation here. I am seriously working on my memoirs, I beg you to communicate to me all the material you can have on our military operations. I would especially like to have information on the battle of Hancoode [Battle of Hondschoode; where he was wounded] and on the operations of the army of the north until after the unblocking of Maubeuge. When I left the army of the north, I left all my papers at headquarters, and I never saw them again; so that I am a little embarrassed to write this part.
