HENRI V Henri d'Artois, duke of Bordeaux,... - Lot 102 - Varenne Enchères
HENRI V Henri d'Artois, duke of Bordeaux, count of Chambord [Paris, 1820 - Frohsdorf, Austria, 1883], legitimate pretender to the throne of France, last descendant of the elder branch of the Bourbons. Signed letter addressed to the General of St- Priest. Frohsdorf, September 19, 1866; 4 pages 1/4 in-4°. Letter written by the secretary of the count of Chambord, M. Moricet intendant in Frohsdorf, in the name of Henri V. The count of Chambord pities himself on the misfortunes of France. "The gravity of the circumstances strikes all the spirits, the situation is full of uncertainties and perils", but his patriotism forbids him any pessimism: "Yes France with its energy, its loyalty, its disinterestedness; prompt to be impassioned for all the great ideas, to devote itself for all the just causes, will always walk at the head of the nations". Exiled since 1830, he proclaims his unalterable will to serve his country in the midst of political turmoil. "As for me, my pain is to see from afar the evils of my country, without it being given to me to share them; but if in the trials that it can still have to cross, Providence calls me one day to serve it, do not doubt it, you will see me appearing resolutely in the middle of you, to save you or perish together.
