CHARCOT Jean-Baptiste [Neuilly-sur-Seine,... - Lot 54 - Varenne Enchères
CHARCOT Jean-Baptiste [Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1867 - at sea, 1936], French scientist and polar explorer. Autograph letter signed. "At sea," July 4, 1921; 4 pages in-8°, on paper with the famous explorer's boat "Pourquoi-pas" at the top. Charcot tells one of his friends about his mineralogical discoveries in Rockall, the difficulties experienced on this occasion by his sailors and says jokingly: "We spent about ten days around this rock and I feel like writing a book entitled "Un été chez les Rockalliens" (a summer among the Rockallians) [...] If you think it is appropriate, share these small successes with the friendly admirals such as Grasset, La Caze, Le Querré, etc., and above all, with the enemy chiefs so that they will be concerned... Rockall is a small island in the northwest of Ireland remarkable for its geological constitution.
