BALZAC Honoré de [Tours, 1799 - Paris, 1850],... - Lot 12 - Varenne Enchères
BALZAC Honoré de [Tours, 1799 - Paris, 1850], French writer. Autograph manuscript written on the back of a receipt from the Religious Universe. 1 page in-12 on yellow paper. It is a copy of a letter by Lamennais published in L'époque ou les Soirées européennes, vol. 1, 1835, p. 95. "I was given from you, Miss, the words of a believer, I thank you for them. I can only be very flattered to have attracted your attention enough for you to have deigned to devote a few moments to refuting the errors which you thought you saw in my book. The Holy Si[monians] would see in this a proof of the progress of women; I see in it one of your goodness, and although unfortunately for me perhaps I cannot tell you that your words have convinced me, I am no less willing to defer a great deal to the authority of a person as deeply versed as you are in politics, philosophy and theology. It is with these feelings of admiration and gratitude that I have the honor to be, Miss, [your very humble and obedient servant]." In another handwriting: "Letter from La Mennais to Miss Aimable Lebot, author of the Words of a Believer". Miss Aimable Lebot had criticized a book of Balzac. Signature crossed out: M. Lazavan
