ALEXANDER II (Alexander Nikolayevich Romanov)... - Lot 3 - Varenne Enchères
ALEXANDER II (Alexander Nikolayevich Romanov) [Moscow, 1818 - St. Petersburg, 1881], Emperor of Russia. Autograph letter signed, in Russian, addressed to his daughter, Grand Duchess Mary, wife of the Duke of Edinburgh, Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria. Tsarskoye Selo, August 17/29, 1880, 3 pages in-8°. A contemporary transcript is attached: "I understand completely that you are happy to be together in peaceful Coburg, but everything here seems sad and empty after your departure. Our stay in Tsarskoye, after the misfortune which struck us, left me with an excellent impression of peace. [...] Thank God, your nice children are getting better and the loved ones have come several times to ride in the carriage with me. Now I'm getting ready to take Alexander and Diki for a last ride. After her brother, Masha caught a cold, probably due to the sudden cold. [...] I leave here tonight and hope to arrive at my destination on the evening of August 21/September 2, with a stop in Chuger to review the troops. [...] Political affairs are in the same indefinable situation because of Turkey's stubbornness. For the moment we are acting in complete agreement with England and I hope that this will continue. It is now time to end it."
