YORUBA (Nigeria)
This rare calabash MASK worn in the Ekiti region of eastern Yoruba country is one of the most beautiful known of this style. Made of a calabash on which the facial features are overmodeled, the whole is covered with a traditional loincloth fabric. The three-crested hairstyle is embellished with buns of cloth containing magical substances. Red patina, cracked on the face.
Published under number 77 of the catalogue of the exhibition "Art of Black Africa in the collections of artists" Arles 1991.
