Arnold BENNETT (1867-1931) (1867-1931) English writer... - Lot 201 - Varenne Enchères
Arnold BENNETT (1867-1931) (1867-1931) English writer and journalist Autograph manuscript, Don Juan, play in four acts, 1913-1914; 142 in-4 pages written on the front, bound half red maroon with corners (Bagguley, Newcastle-under-Lyme). Complete manuscript of Don Juan, play in four acts. Begun, as indicated on the title page, by Bennett in his house in Comarques (Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex) on 17 November 1913 and completed on 25 January 1914, Don Juan was published in London in a limited edition by T. Warner Lawrie in 1923, under the title Don Juan de Marana. The play was never performed. In 1930, Bennett wrote an opera libretto for the composer Eugene Goossens (1893-1962); the work was premiered on June 24, 1959 in Covent Garden. The manuscript consists of a title page written in red ink; a list of characters (List of characters : Don Juan, about fifteen Spanish Greats, clergymen, ladies and nuns, plus extras); 4 acts without numbering scenes, each preceded by a note on the characters in the act; and a note sheet, placed before Act III, containing a few terms of address and Spanish words ("Your grace", "Your reverence", "Your paternity (for a monk)", "alma mia", "mi estrella", etc.).). The action takes place in Spain, at the end of the 16th century: Act I, in the great hall of the castle of the Duke of Marana (Bennett made a pen sketch to illustrate a curtain effect); II, Inez's boudoir; III, a posada (café) in fashion in Madrid; IV, inside the church of the Holy Rosary. Very legibly written, it presents many additions, corrections and deletions, and a great many original or added didascalia. Don Juan, faithful to the literary tradition, swore in a tavern to subvert, undo, destroy and devour a lamb of the Lord, but the outcome presents a dramatic moral reversal...
